I am in the early stages of preparing a resource on Lord Players and Studio Lords and as most of you know information is very hard to come by as they were domestic models only. I have gathered info from the archives and the usual catalogue site, but I can't get very clear scans from the site. I have some specific queries about the LP models, which I will post further on in this thread post but in the meantime I have prepared a pdf of specs dates etc. Which is not on the public part of my web site but can be accessed here If anyone can add, correct or has any extra useful information please let me know.
Good catalogue scans particularly welcome. Contact me either by the forum or on the contact page of my website. Bits in red italics show doubtful about the info or it is incomplete. The Lord Player has 5 models that I can find the 400, 500 and 600 have standard written on the truss rod cover does that mean that there were variations of these models or just that they were all standard, similarly the 800 has custom on it so same question. I am struggling to find any pictures of the 1000 headstock so not sure about this. Also came across one shown as 'classic' see photo my assumption looking at it is that it is a changed truss rod cover anyone know? Attachments smalllpheadclassic.jpg (25.24 KiB) Viewed 3162 times.
1979(?) Yamaha Studio Lord SL800S My father-in-law bought this in '79 or '80, played it a bit, and shelved it until I dug it out. He doesn't play it anymore, so it gave it to me FOR FREE. It's really clean, no fret wear to speak of, hardly any pitting of the hardware, one tiny pin-head sized dent on the back, quiet pots, etc. I didn't know anything about this model when I got it, but I did a bit of research and it's pretty interesting. Yamaha support says it was made in 1979, based on the serial number, though I think they weren't released until 1980. Maple top, mahogany back, maple set neck, striped ebony fretboard, bone nut. The tone controls are push-locks that split the HB coils--interesting, but I like the un-split sound better.
Neck's pretty thin (more of a 60's than a 50's profile), but I have small hands (not quite as small as in the picture, though), so I like it. Plays really nicely and the construction is really clean and solid--even inside the pick-up and control routs.
It's my only HB guitar these days, and even though it's heavy as hell at almost 10 lbs, I've been playing it the most of all my guitars lately. I haven't been a fan of tobacco sunbursts, but it's amazing how having somebody give you one can change your attitude about it. I used to own an Ebony Norlin-era LP Standard; that Gibby had absolutely nothing on this one.
BTW, it's loaded with the original Yamaha L-V humbuckers; anybody know anything about these pick-ups? I'm considering swapping them out at some point. Since the build quality is so good, I reckon it would only take killer pups to send this one into the stratosphere. Things are getting interesting in my guitar collection recently; with the arrival of this one, I have 3-4 that are in a really tight race for #1.. New member here. I love tele's and Yamaha's (but for some reason don't have a Yamaha tele).
I have an SA 2000 that I bought brand new in 1979; my first serious guitar. Replaced the original pups with WCR Darkbursts; the guitar plays and sounds amazing. Had a gorgeous SG 2000, tobacco burst with amazing flame on the top which I got for $500. It was a mess when I got it, had a couple of mediocre Seymours in it, one of which was dead. Replaced the pups with another set of Darkbursts so it sounded really good but at almost 11 pounds it was more than I could comfortably deal with, and it really needed a refret so I sold it last year for $1500, which lessened the pain of loss somewhat.

Besides the SA, I currently have a '90's Japanese SG 700s (great guitar -MUCH lighter weight than the 2000- all mahogany, no maple cap) with Harmonic Design humbuckers, and a heavily modified Weddington Special with P-90's and a old Gibson vibrola. I'll try to get pics up soon.
